Basilan represents one of the most original moments in the design research of Afra and Tobia Scarpa, combining material exploration with construction techniques that were unprecedented in Italian design in the 1970s. A modular rattan framework, enriched with metal details and leather bindings, functions as structure, ornament and spatial definition. The material becomes a narrative element, carrying the memory of the hands and gestures that wove it, transforming the chair into an organic and tactile expression. The woven surfaces seem almost to come alive, achieving a delicate balance between visual lightness and structural solidity.

"To design means to cast forward a thought, a will, a way of doing; it means to give while being in need of everything, it is a ride through an intimate dimension."
